Visit Jackson Announces ‘Soul-Filled’ Weekend

MS Veteran’s Memorial Stadium will play host to both weekend games.

Visit Jackson and the City of Jackson today announced a “Soul-Filled” Weekend, September 25 and 26, with two college football games at the core of weekend activities.

Game one, the W.C. Gorden Classic, pits Jackson State University against Delta State University on Saturday, September 25. Game two, the Delta-Bayou Classic, pits Mississippi Valley State University against Southern University on Sunday, September 26.

Additional events leading up to the weekend tentatively include a President’s reception, coaches luncheon, high school recruiting opportunities, the WC Gorden/Ashley Robinson Golf Classic (September 23), college fair, 5k run and walk, a concert and a Sunday church service.

Over 20,000 fans are expected to attend each game, with additional visitors and locals attending other events during the week-long schedule.

“We are honored to host the Soul-Filled Weekend in Jackson,” said Visit Jackson President and CEO Rickey Thigpen. “The double-header football weekend featuring SWAC and in-state rivalries and ancillary activities will create excitement and synergy for our football fans and economic vitality for our community.

Jackson was chosen to host the weekend, easily accessible at the intersection of I-55 and I-20, with a host of hotels and restaurants, shopping venues and cultural attractions ready to welcome fans.

The Soul-Filled Weekend is estimated to bring $15M in economic impact to the city and surrounding area.

Joining Thigpen at today’s announcement was Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba; State Representative Chris Bell; MVSU President Dr. Jerryl Briggs; Jesse Thompson, JSU Tiger Fund; and MVSU Athletic Director Dianthia Ford-Kee.

Thigpen adds, “This initiative is the first of many that Visit Jackson is working toward to attract more sporting events to our capital city.”
